There may come a time when you have more than one Google account, and you want them to appear in different ways on different devices.
In my case, I have a work Gmail account and a personal Gmail account. On my work laptop, of course I want my work email to come up when I go to Gmail. But on my personal laptop, where I don't want to be reminded of work, I want my personal account to appear when I type in mail.google.com.
How to change default Google account
- Sign out of Gmail completely.
- Open a new browser and log in first to the account you want to be the default.
- Log in to your other account(s).
- Check you've changed your default by opening Gmail in a new browser. Your default account should appear.
It's worth taking a minute to change this. It's a time management thing. Imagine seeing your personal email every morning when you check your emails at work. It would be distracting, and you'd spend the first 30 minutes of your work day tracking your Amazon packages or responding to grandma.
Changing your default Google account is easy and can be done on different devices. Follow along here to learn how!
How to change default Google account
The solution to this annoyance is so simple, there's really no reason not to do it! I'll go through it step-by-step with visuals so you can easily go through the process. It will do wonders for your morning routine!
I'm going to go through how I changed my work account to be my default account.
1. Sign out of your Gmail
Go to mail.google.com to access whatever your current default Gmail account is. From there, click on your profile picture in the right corner. A drop-down menu will appear. Select 'Sign Out' at the bottom.

This will sign you out of both accounts.
2. Log in to the account you want to be the default
Open a new browser and go to Gmail again.
Now, this is very important. You must log in to the account you want to be the default first. So in this case, I'm going to log in to my work account.

3. Sign in to your other account(s)
Now you can sign in to your personal and any other Gmail accounts you might have. You do this by clicking on your account picture in the top right corner. Then, from the drop-down menu, click on the account that is currently signed out.

You may have to enter your password again. Do so and — bam — you're logged in to that account on a separate tab.
4. Check that your default set correctly
You can check that your default account was set correctly by clicking on your account image once more in the top right. In that drop-down menu, it will say '(Default).'

Now I can go on my personal laptop and log in to my personal Gmail first to set it as the default on that device.
There you have it! Easy-peasy.
